クール・ジャズの代名詞とも言えるチェット・ベイカー。その甘いルックスから”ジャズ界のジェームス・ディーン”と呼ばれた男。1950年代、ジェリー・マリガンとのピアノレス・カルテットで一躍注目を集め、 『Chet Baker Sings』でヴォーカリストとしても鮮烈な印象を残す。 しかし薬物依存や逮捕、暴力事件など波乱に満ちた私生活を抱えながらも、 ヨーロッパを中心に活動を続け、日本でも熱烈な支持を集めた。1988年、オランダ・アムステルダムのホテルから転落し、58歳でこの世を去ったチェット。 その死は謎に包まれながらも、彼の音楽は今もなお輝き続ける。

Chet Baker, a name synonymous with cool jazz, was often called “the James Dean of the jazz” for his sweet looks. In the 1950s, he rose to fame as part of Gerry Mulligan’s innovative pianoless quartet, and left a lasting impression as a vocalist with the release of ”Chet Baker Sings”. Despite a turbulent personal life marked by drug addiction, arrests, and violent incidents, Baker continued to perform—primarily in Europe—where he found devoted audiences, including in Japan. In 1988, he tragically died at the age of 58 after falling from a hotel window in Amsterdam. Though the circumstances of his death remain shrouded in mystery, his music continues to shine, touching hearts around the world.

In 1986, jazz icon Chet Baker made his miraculous debut in Japan, promising fans, “Let’s meet again soon.” Just one year later, he kept that promise—returning in 1987 for a series of unforgettable performances. This album captures the magic of the first set from his June 6th live show in Fukui, delivering the raw intimacy and lyrical brilliance that only Chet could conjure.
