81年、樋口宗孝（ds）、高崎 晃（g）、二井原 実（vo）、山下昌良（b）の4人で“LOUDNESS”を結成。日本のハード・ロック・シーンを揺るがすファースト・アルバム『誕生前夜～THE BIRTHDAY EVE』をリリース、浅草国際劇場でのデビュー・コンサートで圧倒的なライヴを見せつけたところから、数々の伝説がうまれていくことになる。
その後、国内で精力的な活動を行っていたLOUDNESSは、83年7月には初のアメリカ西海岸、そしてヨーロッパツアーを敢行し、そのライヴが、アメリカのアトランティック・レコード関係者の目にとまり、日本のバンドとしては初となるワールドワイドの複数枚契約を結ぶこととなる。記念すべき世界発売となったアルバム『THUNDER IN THE EAST』は、アメリカ「ビルボード誌」のチャートでは、日本人バンドとしては異例の74位を記録し、チャート・インから連続19週に渡ってチャート・インし続けた。そして、モトリー・クルーとの全米ツアーでは、日本のバンドとしては初のマジソン・スクエア・ガーデンのステージに立つという快挙も成し遂げる。続くアルバム『LIGHTNING STRIKES』はビルボード誌では前作を凌ぐ64位を記録し、その後も国内外で精力的な活動をつづけるが、88年12月、二井原が脱退を表明。そこからは、アメリカ人ヴォーカリストをはじめ、数度に及ぶメンバーチェンジを繰り返すが、2000年に入り、オリジナル・ラインナップによる再結成を果たし、アルバム『SPIRITUAL CANOE～輪廻転生』をリリース。全国ツアーも行ない、帰ってきたラウドネスにファンは大狂乱。ブランクを埋めるがごとく怒涛のリリースラッシュと、精力的なライヴ活動をつづけるが、ALBUM『METAL MAD』をリリース後、樋口宗孝が肝細胞癌治療のため休養。その後半年間にわたり、過酷な闘病生活を送っていたが、同年11月30日午前10時44分、樋口宗孝が肝細胞癌のため49歳という若さでこの世を去る。
その後、後任ドラマーに鈴木“あんぱん”政行を迎え入れ、バンドは休む間もなく活動を続行。2013年には、より磐石な体制で音楽活動に専念するため、自らのマネージメント＆レーベルとなるカタナミュージックを立ち上げ、2014年にはアルバム『THE SUN WILL RISE AGAIN～撃魂霊刀』をユニバーサルよりリリース、国内ツアーはもとより、海外の様々なフェスから声がかかるようになる。毎年夏にヨーロッパのメタルフェスを渡り歩く成果も年々実りだし、2018年1月、4年ぶりのニュー・アルバム『RISE TO GLORY -8118-』を全世界同時リリース、各国で最大限の評価をうけるも、いざこれからツアーというタイミングで、ドラマー鈴木が脳梗塞で倒れる。その後、バンドは、急遽サポートドラマーに西田竜一を迎えいれ、春からの国内ツアーを敢行することを決定、夏は大型フェスティバルを含むヨーロッパツアー、久々の韓国フェス出演と、精力的に世界を駆け巡った。
そして、9月にZepp DiverCutyで4日間にわたって行われた「METAL WEEKEND」最終日では、9ヶ月ぶりに鈴木もステージに登場、１曲のみであったがドラムを叩く元気な姿と、完全復帰に向けて、時間がかかっても必ず頑張るとステージ上で宣言、年末に行われた「Rock Beats Cancer Vol.6」では、5曲のパフォーマンスで、ファンにその回復振りをみせつけた。
2019年も、バンドは引き続き西田をサポートドラマーに向かえ、5月には初上陸となるオーストラリアツアー、そして日本ツアー、6月にフィンランドで行われるTUSKA FESTIVALと、精力的に活動をつづけ、鈴木の帰ってくる場所をみなで守り続けるので、ファンのみなさんにも温かく見守っていて欲しい。
